5. PointsBet

In a somewhat surprising development, PointsBet is set to become the ninth online sportsbook in New Jersey. The Australian company received its approval from the New Jersey Department of Gaming Enforcement on Dec. 11.

PointsBet will solely operate online and will use the Meadowlands license. There will be no retail version of the site.

Among its products, PointsBet’s signature product is a unique twist on sports betting called spread betting. Instead of a set amount of win or loss on a bet, players’ fortunes depend on the degree to which they’re correct.

So, for instance, if the over/under on a game is 70 points, then the payouts or losses derive from the distance that the actual total is from 70. So, if the teams combine for 80 points, the player wins more than if they combine for 75. Conversely, the player loses more if they only manage 60 points versus 65 points.

Needless to say, there is a risky quality to this type of sports betting. However, the wins can also be outsized compared to traditional wagering options.

6. Caesars

Caesars became the sixth online sportsbook in New Jersey on Sept. 6. The app is available for both iOS (via the Apple Store) and Android users (through the Caesars Casino website).

The 888 Sport app offers different areas of focus for New Jersey players. One of its main components is exceptionally granular in-game betting.

Players can wager on the minutiae of individual sporting events with ease. Individual points and outcomes of single plays are available for betting.

For one thing, playMGM was available to Android users for almost two months. On Oct. 20 it finally launched its iOS app for Apple users.

There is also not much integration right now. In fact, sources indicate that the Nevada version of their sportsbook will use different odds than the New Jersey book.

However, for players with loyalty to MGM or Borgata, the release is likely a welcome relief from DraftKings’s de facto monopoly.

10. Hard Rock

Is Online Sports Betting Legal in NJ?

YES! NJ online sportsbooks and AC sports betting is legal.

On Monday, May 14 2018, New Jersey won a landmark ruling from the Supreme Court in favor of legalizing real money sports gambling in AC and online anywhere in NJ, on college and professional sports. Now, legal sportsbooks exist at NJ casinos and race tracks, as well as online with sports betting sites and mobile apps.

The law that was passed by Congress a quarter century ago, forcing states to keep sports gambling bans on the books, was deemed unconstitutional by the justices in a 6-3 voting decision.

It was also a nice victory for NJ’s former governor, Chris Christie, who worked hard throughout his term challenging the PASPA (Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act).

His main goal was to “fight for the rights of the people NJ,” and to help strengthen the future success of NJ casinos and racetracks on-site.

New Jersey is the reason sports betting is spreading across the US. After the US Supreme Court struck down the federal ban in NJ, other states started fighting for the legalization of sports betting.

As of today, these nine states have legal, state-regulated sports betting industries:

However, the rock-themed casino took some time to bring forth its complete sports betting vision. Hard Rock only opened the permanent venue for sports betting in March 2019.

Who can place a bet and what sports can be bet on?

Gamblers in New Jersey must be 21 or older in order to make a bet anywhere in the state.

The bill also includes language preventing athletes, coaches, referees, and any other persons with potential influence or access to non-public information regarding sporting events, from making bets on games overseen by the league in which they participate.

Additionally, New Jersey sportsbooks are prohibited from taking bets on high school sports or collegiate athletics taking place in the state or involving New Jersey teams.

What if a casino owns a team franchise?

Clauses were also included in the new law to allow MGM, Caesars, and Golden Nugget properties to open sportsbooks, despite each having some ownership stake in a professional sports team.

The bill prohibits casino operators who own a stake of 10 percent or more in a sports franchise from offering sports betting. For example, since Apollo Capital Management, a private equity firm co-founded by Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils owner Joshua Harris, owns less than 10 percent of Caesars Entertainment, its Atlantic City casino properties have been authorized to open sportsbooks.

Casino operators also qualify for a waiver to this provision if the sports franchise is worth less than one percent of the operator’s total business.

Finally, the bill authorizes online sports betting out of licensed casinos and racetracks, beginning 30 days after it becomes a law. The bill sets the tax rate for online sportsbook operations at 13 percent.

Who oversees the NJ sports betting market?

The new law authorizes the state’s Division of Gaming Enforcement and New Jersey Racing Commission to issue emergency regulations to govern sports betting in the state. These regulations are in effect for a period of up to 270 days and allow licensed casinos and racetracks to apply for what’s called a transactional waiver.
